Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney may be fit to play for England in their Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on Tuesday, October 12.
24 years set to be out for up to three weeks with an ankle injury, but United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said Rooney could be available for England.
Rooney took the injury in the second half United's 2-2 draw at Bolton last weekend.
He will not be fit in time to play for United against Sunderland on Saturday.
"Wayne trained on Thursday and he wants to play on Saturday," said Ferguson. "But I have to take the view that this injury has been niggling away for the time and he kept playing.
"I should be dead sure that I did the right thing because Wayne has not done himself justice I think. Within a week he'll be fine. Obviously we did not play in a week, so until [England boss] Fabio Capello if he wanted him.
"The Montenegro match is another 10 days away and by that time I would expect Wayne to be 100%."
The news is a huge boost to Capello, considering he is unable to select Frank Lampard, Theo Walcott, Jermain Defoe and Bobby Zamora because of injuries.
Newcastle striker Andy Carroll has been tipped to win his first call-up to the senior squad after he was left out of Stuart Pearce's Under-21s.
Rooney has endured a poor start to the season for United but he scored on his last England appearance, the 3-1 Euro 2012 qualifying win over Switzerland in September.
Ferguson admitted last week that Rooney was feeling the strain of being in the media spotlight after allegations about his private life.
The United boss will also be without veteran midfielders Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs at Sunderland as they are both injured, while he will monitor the fitness of Rio Ferdinand, Anderson and Michael Carrick who have all recently returned from lay-offs.
